Our Parish Priest

Monsignor Peter Magee has been Parish Priest of St Mary's, Largs and Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Millport since May 2018, when he succeeded Fr Eamonn Flynn on his retirement. The parish is a part of the Diocese of Galloway, under Bishop Frank Dougan.

Mgr Peter is from North Ayrshire. He went to school at St Peter's Primary in Ardrossan and St Michael's Academy in Kilwinning before training for the priesthood in Rome, at the Pontifical Scots College and the Pontifical Gregorian University.

About Priest

Mgr.Peter was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Galloway on 2 July 1981 at St Peter in Chains, Ardrossan — the first ordination celebrated by Bishop Maurice Taylor.

More on the Mgr. Peter

His early years of ministry were spent as an assistant priest at St Mary's, Irvine and St Teresa's, Dumfries. He then returned to Rome for further study and, in 1988, entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. His missions as a papal diplomat took him to several countries, including Zimbabwe and the United States, where he spent five years in Washington, much of it working on the appointment of bishops. After leaving diplomacy he taught for a time in Washington, including at Georgetown University, before coming home to Galloway.

Back in the diocese he served as parish priest of Newton Stewart, Wigtown and Whithorn, and later led the Scottish Catholic                Inter-Diocesan Tribunal, which handles marriage and canon law cases for the dioceses of Scotland. He holds degrees in philosophy and theology and a doctorate in canon law.

In recognition of his service to the Church he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness in 1991 and later a Prelate of Honour, which is why he carries the title Monsignor.

To parishioners in Largs and Millport, though, he is simply Fr Peter — bringing a wealth of experience from the wider Church to the everyday life of our two communities.
