BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the first of the sacraments and the doorway to all the others. Through the pouring of water and the words "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," a person is washed free of sin, born to new life in Jesus Christ, as a child of God, and welcomed into the family of the Church.

What Baptism means for everyday life.

Baptism tells us who we are: loved by God, belonging to him, and never alone. For parents, bringing a child to be baptised is a way of thanking God for the gift of new life and promising to raise their child in faith, with the support of godparents and the whole parish community.

For adults, it marks the beginning of a new life as a follower of Jesus Christ. Every time we bless ourselves with holy water as we enter church, we remember our Baptism.

Baptisms are celebrated at St Mary's and Our Lady's. Parents are asked to contact the parish office as early as possible to arrange a date and any preparation. Adults who have not been baptised are warmly invited to explore the faith through our RCIA programme, Journey in Faith.
